About What's Bloomin'

A curated plant reference and bloom planning tool built for US gardeners.

What this is

What's Bloomin' helps you find plants that bloom in your zone, in your season, with your conditions. Browse 292+ plants with detailed bloom calendars, zone ranges, sun and water needs, companion recommendations, and traits like deer resistance and pollinator friendliness. Use the garden planner to build a collection and see your bloom coverage across the year.

How it works

Enter your zip code to find your USDA hardiness zone. Filter by bloom season, sun exposure, water needs, plant type, and color. The bloom calendar shows you exactly which months each plant flowers so you can plan for continuous color. The garden planner lets you save plants and spot gaps in your bloom schedule at a glance.

Our approach

This is not a dry encyclopedia. Every plant description is opinionated, practical, and written to help you make real planting decisions. We focus on plants that home gardeners actually grow, with honest notes about what thrives and what struggles. Companion plant pairings are based on complementary bloom times, growing conditions, and visual contrast.

The data

Zone ranges follow the 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Bloom seasons reflect typical performance across each plant's recommended zone range. Sun, water, and soil data are verified against multiple horticultural sources. We update the database regularly as we add new plants and refine existing entries.
